'We're on a crusade' - Lee Johnson gives update on Bristol City's transfer hunt

The Robins are working hard to bring in quality rather than quantity this summer according to head coach Lee Johnson.

The Bristol City boss was at Wembley on Sunday taking in the League One play-off final and gave a quick interview at half time of Charlton Athletic's win over Sunderland, when he was asked about his new contract and his transfer plans.

Speaking to TalkSport, the head coach gave his reaction to his new contract at Ashton Gate and answered on what City aim to do next in the transfer market having sold Lloyd Kelly.

He also gave a hint as to the thinking at Ashton Gate in saying that the Robins are 'on a crusade' - a surefire reference to how City are looking to make it to the Premier League via financial fairplay.

"Very happy, it’s a big project for us and we feel like we’re on a bit of a crusade and it’s a great city," said Johnson of his new four-year deal.

"My family are very happy, we’ve got a very good relationship with the board and the owner, and we’re continuing on this mission to try and get the club promoted."

That mission includes City going up via fair means - explaining why Kelly was recently sold for upwards of £13m so that the money can be reinvested in the team to help challenge in 2019-20.

As for recruitment, the head coach gave a brief update on City's plans this season and suggested that the emphasis is on fewer quality signings, with just centre-back Robbie Cundy added to the Bristol City roster so far.

"Yeah, absolutely [we're looking to recruit a few players currently]," said Johnson.

"That recruitment is an evolution at the moment, not a revolution because we’ve already got some very good players,"

"And if we can just add the two or three in key areas of the pitch, hopefully we’ll compete for a bit longer in the top six," he added.
