A "highly intelligent" man who ran half marathons was killed after being hit by a train in Urmston, an inquest heard.
Kevin Costello, 43, an economics graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University, had been suffering with his mental health in the run up to his tragic death, Stockport Coroner's Court heard.
The keen sportsman, who married his wife Ruth Costello in 2013, had contacted his GP in March 2020, complaining of neck and shoulder pain, and anxiety states.
On March 24, 2020 he had a telephone consultation about neck pain and was advised to take Gaviscon and do neck exercises.
Then on May 18, 2020, Mr Costello, who lived with his wife on North Grove, Urmston, was seen at Trafford urgent care for lethargy and fatigue.
He was said to be suffering from ongoing pain in his arm and shoulder and complained of pain "radiating" in his left arm.

The inquest heard how Mr Costello, who lost his father to suicide in 1994, could no longer run or cycle due to shoulder pain and this was said to affect his mental health.
It was said Mr Costello, who was studying to be a software engineer and programmer, was suffering from anxiety, depression and burn out and in April 2020 he could not finish his course, which went online in June 2020.
His wife rang 999 in April and he was taken to A&E with heart palpitations. The inquest heard how he was suffering from anxiety.
He felt something was wrong with him and he became increasingly anxious, looking up symptoms online, the inquest was told.
In a written statement, Ruth Costello, who did not attend the inquest, said he started getting up later than usual and not doing as much as he used to do.
In June 2020 he went out for a walk and switched his phone off. When questioned about it on his return he told his wife he wanted a break.
On July 8 he spent the day in his bedroom with his curtains closed and said things like: "We're not going to get any better."
The following day, July 9, he went for a walk and went to see his sister Mary in Eccles.

Mrs Costello stated: "At 9.30am on July 10, he said he was going to go for a walk and would be back at lunch time."
"He seemed OK, not withdrawn and he would often go for walks by canals.
"After he left I did not speak to or see him again."
Leanne Callan, Fatality Investigator at British Transport Police said: "On July 10, 2020 at 9.52am we received a call that a person had been struck by a train at Urmston train station."
Mrs Callan said a "note of intent" addressed to Mrs Costello in his hand writing had later been found.
At the time of the incident Mr Costello had been identified by his driving licence and a piece of paper with his next of kins details on it.
Mrs Callan said CCTV footage and a member of the public who was an eyewitness all led to the same conclusion that Mr Costello had jumped in front of the train.
Recording his death as consequence of suicide, Area Coroner for South Manchester, Chris Morris said: "This is a tragic case.
"Kevin was highly intelligent and was studying to be a software engineer and programmer at the time of his death.
"In 2020 he became increasingly preoccupied with his own health.
"He suffered neck pain, spine pain, altered sensation and tingling.
"On two occasions he attended hospital and saw his GP, but it was nothing serious."
Mr Morris went on to say how Mr Costello had feared he was having a heart attack but investigations were essentially normal.
And he described how in the weeks before his death his wife had said his mood was of concern.
He summarised: "Tragically on July 10, 2020 Mr Costello was killed when he placed himself in the path of the service from Nottingham to Liverpool Lime Street.
"There is no evidence that drugs or alcohol played a part.
"He died at Urmston Railway Station as a result of multiple injuries."
