We're not alone! A list of other places around the world named after Dublin city and towns

Living in one of Europe's most celebrated capital cities is a thing to be proud of for most Dubliners.

However, have you ever wondered how many 'Dublins' there are across the globe?

With just under 20 Dublins in the US alone, it's fair to say Molly Malone and the Spire doesn't spring to mind for everyone when the city is mentioned.

World Whiskey Day: three classic whiskey cocktails to tantalise your tastebuds

Here's a list of a few of them:

Dublin, Ohio

This takes the distinguished crown as probably the second best-known Dublin outside of Ireland.

As of 2013, the population was just over 3% of what our Dublin's population is, with 43,607 living here.

The city got its name in 1810, when Dubliner John Shields was given the opportunity to name the village.

As the story goes he replied: “If I have the honor conferred upon me to name your village, with the brightness of the morn, and the beaming of the sun on the hills and dales surrounding this beautiful valley, it would give me great pleasure to name your new town after my birthplace, Dublin, Ireland.”

It’s not only the name it shares with our fine capital - it also boasts its own Abbey Theatre, a Brazenhead Pub, an Inishfree Lane and a Phoenix Park Drive.

As well as this, the city is the location of the HQ for the famous fast food outlet 'Wendy's' in the US.

The sex of Dublin Zoo's adorable baby gorilla has been revealed

Dublin, Georgia

This is some spot, perhaps best known as the location of the annual 'Redneck Games' in the US.

Anyone familiar with James Joyce's work will also be aware that it is referenced by the writer in ‘Finnegans Wake’.

It was founded in 1812 and it’s believed that like their namesake across the country, one of the founders - a man with the surname Sawyer - named it after the capital city of his homeland.

The city had a population of 16,201 as of 2010.

Fingal Head, New South Wales

Fingal Head, New South Wales. Not bad, eh? (Google Maps)

Located on the North Coast of New South Wales, Australia, this is a bit of a mini paradise, isn't it?

Much like Fingal in North County Dublin, it has some ocean views that will leave you speechless.

It has a small enough population, about 575 people as of 2006, but no doubt this increases ten fold during sunny days out here.

Dublin, Texas

Founded in 1854, unlike other places across the US, historians can’t agree on why it was named our capital.

As of 2010, 3,654 lucky individuals were able to claim Dublin as their home in Texas.

It is perhaps best-known as impressively being the former home of the world's oldest Dr Pepper bottling plant.

The town isn't exactly known for much else, as one of it's most famous people was a 1932 Olympic rifle competitor by the name of Rom Stanifer.

Malahide, Ontario

Port Bruce, Malahide, Ontario (Google Maps)

To be fair to Ontario, they are big fans of Irish names. Carlingford, Dundalk, Maynooth, Tullamore, Wicklow, Westmeath, and Waterford amongst the names repped by the Canadian Province.

Founded in 1810, this tiny settlement had a population of just over 9,000 as of 2011.

Again not known for much, the Ontario Police College is located in Malahide, at the site of the former Royal Canadian Air Force Station Aylmer, a training facility.

Yeah, not exactly valuable information.

It has a few interesting names surrounding it (we like the sound of Candyville), as London, Onatrio is bordering the township.

Dublin weather forecast: Temperatures to soar to 19C with plenty of sunshine

Clontarf, Queensland

Hornibrook bridge, Clontarf, Queensland (Google Maps)

If I told you there was a bridge that connected Brighton and Clontarf you'd probably look at me like I had 10 heads, but believe it or not there is one, albeit on the other side of the world.

The bridge in question, the Hornibrook bridge, kind of sounds like an x-rated take on closeby Donnybrook.

For a bit of extra information, of 2011, the town had a population of just under 8,000, with 90.7% of people speaking English; with the next most common languages being 0.4% German, 0.3% Dutch, 0.3% Italian, 0.3% Samoan.

As well as this, 76.2% of people living in Clontarf were born in Australia. The other top responses for country of birth were New Zealand 5.5%, England 5.2%, Scotland 0.8%, Philippines 0.8%, South Africa 0.5%.

Dublin, Adelaide Plains, South Australia

Dublin, Adelaide Plains (Google Maps)

This Dublin is primarily used as a commuter town to nearby major city Adelaide, located approximately 60km away.

If you browse street view in this location, there is a high probability you'll end up on a dirt road with no end in sight.

This does look like a good place for a road trip, to be fair.

Yes, you read that right.

Other worthy mentions:

If you're looking for a Ballymun in North Africa then don't hold your breath, although there is plenty of random Irish county and town names scattered across the globe.

Dublin, Kentucky, is a community in the Bluegrass State’s Graves County, and was named after the Irish capital.

Drumcondra is a wealthy residential suburb of 'Geelong', Victoria, Australia. Yes you also read that right.

The Liffey Valley Reserve is a nature reserve comprising of four separate parcels of land, with a combined area of 275 ha (680 acres), in the Liffey Valley of northern Tasmania, Australia. Jeesh, they really love us over there!

Glendalough is a suburb of Perth, Australia. It is located about 6 kilometres from Perth's central business district. It was named after Glendalough lake and valley which needs no introduction.

There are also Dublins in Arizona, Arkansas and Alabama.
