We're hitting 'snooze' on plain white linens – Dakota Johnson's unusual, autumnal color combination is the cozy alternative bedding to try this fall

Dakota Johnson.

'I think people are scared to experiment with dark colors in their bedrooms,' Carlin van Noppen, bedding and design expert at Fig Linens and Home, tells Homes & Gardens. 'But it almost always pays off.'

Dakota Johnson home is living proof. The actress's mid-century modern bedroom, designed by Pierce and Ward, features a yellow bed swathed in a black, red, and green throw blanket. Yellow green throw pillows are arranged at the top. Though the color combination is unusual, it works perfectly to tie the entire room together.

While many people opt for white bedding to create a breezy coastal feel during the summer, but as the air becomes crisper, now is the perfect time to try something more cocooning. Dakota Johnson's space shows that these two don't have to be mutually exclusive.

Rather than completely swapping out her simple white sheets, Dakota opts to winterize them by bringing in richer tones. This helps to create a perfect balance, where the room feels appropriate for any season, but distinctly cozy.

If you love Dakota's look, you're in luck, it's unbelievably easy to recreate. Here are a few of our favorite tried and tested pieces of the best bedding to get you started.

Why does Dakota Johnson's combination of yellow, red, and green work so well, even though it's so unusual?

Bedding expert Carlin explains: 'Dakota Johnson makes a bold combination work by grounding it with neutrals, and creating consistent threads of color throughout the space. To the first point, she has chosen simple wooden walls and wicker chairs, which help to offset the colorful bedroom idea from feeling overwhelming. The white sheets also help with this effect.'

She continues: 'Furthermore, the yellow and red don't just come out of nowhere. They tie in to the yellow of the headboard, the red of the rug, and the books on the bedside table. It is so stunning.'

It's a cliché that the magic happens outside of your comfort zone; but it's often true in the case of design. When you lean into unexpected pairings and unusual schemes, that's when your design truly comes to life.
