'We're facing extreme fire weather': Bushfires NT on standby after Darwin River blaze

The fires were burning at Darwin River, south of Darwin.

Authorities will investigate the cause of three fires that burnt out at least 1,000 hectares south of Darwin yesterday, after narrowly avoiding surrounding properties.

Watch and act alerts were issued for Meade Road at Darwin River and on Russ Road, Reedbeds Rd and Old Bynoe Road at Darwin River, but they have since been downgraded to an advice message.

At around 3:00pm on Sunday, the blaze edged within 100 metres of the Darwin River Tavern and surrounding properties, but no damage was sustained.

Bushfires NT said the cause of yesterday's fires was unknown — and crews would be on call again for dangerous fire weather into Monday.

"Wind [is] still blowing strongly, the air is very dry, there's a lot of very dry fuel," said policy officer Ken Baulch.

"A little spark can start a fire. We don't have any knowledge yet about how these fires started.

"We'll be trying to get some rest and trying to get everybody rested up for another big day."

An extreme fire danger forecast remains in place for the Darwin and Adelaide River areas, and a fire ban has been enacted for most of the Top End.

Meade Road resident Les Ferguson spent Sunday afternoon putting out spot fires on his 40 acre property.

He said there had been eight fires over the season — some suspected to have been deliberately lit.

"It's a worry, a lot of people out here aren't real rich," he said.

"If you don't have insurance, you could lose everything."
