We’re down to a trio of winless first-year NFL coaches

Kliff Kingsbury and Vic Fangio finally found their way into the win column on Sunday. The Cardinals eked out a victory on the road against Cincinnati, leaving Zac Taylor and his Bengals winless. Fangio took his Broncos to Los Angeles and they were staunch in posting a 20-13 victory over the Chargers.

The only guy in the trio of the winless who caught a break this week was Brian Flores, as the Dolphins were on a bye.

A look at what hopes each of the zero bunch has to find their first victory.

Bengals: Zac Taylor

The Bengals have suffered three losses by a combined eight points. The other two defeats have been absolutely ugly, by a total of 68-20. There doesn’t appear to be imminent hope for a victory as next week brings a trip to Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. They then play host to the Jaguars and journey to the Rams in Week 8 before a bye. There is every likelihood Taylor and Cincinnati could head into that 0-8.

Jets: Adam Gase

Another fruitless effort as the Jets were crushed by the Philadelphia Eagles, dropping them to 0-4. The bye last week did them no favors, nor with the schedule. Up next are the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife and they have to be smarting after a home defeat against the Packers. That is followed by a home game against New England and a trip to Jacksonville. The glimmer of victory exists because Gang Green travels to Miami for a Week 9 matchup that could feature Adam Gase returning to face his former team with both winless.

Dolphins: Brian Flores

For one Sunday, at least, Brian Flores was able to rest. That’s because Miami was on its bye with a horrendous 0-4 mark. There is hope on the horizon as winless Washington comes to Miami for a Week 6 winless wonder game. If Miami does not win against Washington, it is looking at trips to Buffalo and Pittsburgh before a home game against the Jets in Week 9.

The total damage

There are eight first-year coaches in the NFL. They have a combined mark of 8-24-1. Half of those victories belong to Matt LaFleur, whose Packers are at 4-1. The three teams whose coaches are winless in their debut seasons are currently 0-13. Not pretty.
