We’re Begging You, Stop Saying These 10 Things to Retail Workers

Retail workers are on the front lines of customer service, dealing with a constant stream of people from all walks of life. They are often underpaid, overworked, and underappreciated, yet they are expected to maintain a friendly and helpful demeanor at all times. While most customers are polite, many unknowingly use phrases that are frustrating, condescending, or simply unhelpful. A little bit of empathy and awareness can go a long way in making their difficult job more pleasant. For better interactions, let’s achieve retail worker respect by retiring some of these common, cringe-worthy phrases.

1. “Do You Actually Work Here?”

This question is often asked while the employee is actively performing a work-related task, like stocking shelves or wearing a company-branded uniform and name tag. It can come across as dismissive, as if you are questioning their presence or competence. A more polite and effective way to get their attention is to simply say, “Excuse me, can you help me with something?” This approach is more direct and respectful of their role. It acknowledges that they are indeed working.

2. “It Didn’t Scan? It Must Be Free Then!”

This is perhaps the single most overused and unoriginal joke in the retail world. Cashiers hear this multiple times a day, every single day, and are expected to force a laugh each time. While it may seem harmless, it’s incredibly repetitive and rarely lands as funny. The cashier is trying to resolve a technical issue, and this comment does nothing to help the situation. A moment of patient silence is far more appreciated than this tired attempt at humor.

3. “The Customer Is Always Right.”

This outdated mantra is often wielded by customers to demand unreasonable things or to win an argument. In reality, the customer is not always right, and employees are required to follow store policies. Using this phrase puts the worker in an impossible position, forcing them to choose between placating the customer and potentially getting in trouble for breaking a rule. It’s a power-play phrase that undermines the employee’s authority and shows a lack of retail worker respect.

4. “Can You Just Check in the Back?”

While sometimes there is extra stock in the backroom, this question is often a source of frustration. Employees typically have inventory systems that tell them exactly what is in stock, so they already know if there’s more. Asking them to go on a pointless journey to a disorganized backroom just to confirm what they already know wastes everyone’s time. Trust the employee when they tell you that there are no more items available.

5. “You Look Bored. I’ll Give You Something to Do.”

This comment is often made when an employee is standing at their post during a quiet moment, and it is incredibly condescending. It implies that the worker is lazy or not doing their job, when in reality, they are simply waiting for the next task or customer. Retail jobs involve periods of high-intensity work and moments of calm; these quiet times are a necessary part of the rhythm. Assuming they are bored is presumptuous and rude.

6. “You Just Lost a customer.”

This is often used as a threat when a customer doesn’t get their way, whether it’s regarding a coupon, a return, or a discount. For a frontline employee who has little to no control over store policy, this threat is both stressful and meaningless. They are simply doing their job as instructed by their managers. Declaring that you’ll never shop there again is an attempt to punish the employee for a situation they did not create.

7. “Why Is This So Expensive?”

Retail employees have absolutely no control over the prices of the items in the store. They don’t set the prices, and they don’t get a commission from them. Questioning them about the cost of an item is pointless and puts them in an awkward position. They can’t give you a discount, and they can’t explain the company’s entire pricing strategy to you. This question is better directed to corporate headquarters, not the person scanning your items.

8. “Are You New Here?”

This question is almost always delivered with a condescending tone when an employee is struggling with a task or needs to ask a coworker for help. It’s a thinly veiled insult to their competence. Everyone has to learn a new job, and being new is not a character flaw. Instead of questioning their experience, try to be patient and understanding as they work to resolve your issue.

9. “I Know the Owner.”

This is another classic power-play tactic used to intimidate an employee into bending the rules. It is highly unlikely that the customer actually knows the owner of a large retail chain. Even if they do, it doesn’t entitle them to special treatment or exempt them from store policies. This phrase is an attempt to bully the employee and is a clear sign of disrespect for their position.

10. “I Want to Speak to Your Manager.”

While there are legitimate reasons to escalate an issue, this phrase is often used far too quickly as a first resort. It’s frequently deployed the moment an employee says “no” to an unreasonable request. This immediately dismisses the employee and creates a tense situation. Before demanding a manager, try to work with the employee to understand the policy and see if there are other potential solutions. The manager will likely tell you the same thing, so this often just wastes time.

Fostering Better Retail Interactions

Retail workers deserve to be treated with dignity and kindness. By avoiding these common, frustrating phrases, we can make their work environment a little less stressful. A little empathy goes a long way in showing retail worker respect. The next time you’re shopping, remember that there is a human being behind the counter who is just trying to do their job to the best of their ability.
