'We're back': Mooseheads to reopen in Canberra

One of Canberra's biggest nightlife destinations will reopen next week after a COVID-19 hiatus.

Mooseheads Pub & Nightclub has released a video on its Facebook page announcing it will reopen on September 24.

"We're back. Although a bit smaller than usual," the announcement said.

Within one hour, the Facebook post announcing the reopening had received 8000 views and 474 comments.

Despite closing its doors on March 23, Mooseheads has kept the party going on social media; from organising livestreamed DJ sets to campaigning for a moose emoji.

But Mooseheads' announcement is bittersweet for those into Canberra's nightlife. Not all of the capital's venues have survived lockdown.

One casualty is Mr Wolf in Civic.

Managing director Leigh Barnett announced earlier this month the nightclub would not reopen after lockdown.

"It would be irresponsible for us as a business to continue to mount costs based on a pandemic that had no end date," he told the ABC.

Mooseheads' reopening probably won't be a typical night of raucous dancing and sweaty mosh pits as stage 3.1 restrictions continue in the ACT.

Since September 1, venues have been able to have one person per four square metres, with a maximum capacity of 100 people.

And under stage 3.1 restrictions, bars, pubs and clubs are able to serve alcohol to seated patrons only.

While live music can go ahead, audiences must be seated and stay two metres away from the performers.

From September 18, smaller-sized venues in Canberra will be able to return to their pre-COVID-19 capacity, with 25 patrons across entire venues.
