'We're all so proud' - Family of Bulwell's Olympic weightlifting star Emily Campbell can’t wait to see her compete

The family of a Bulwell weightlifter are wishing her good luck ahead of her Olympic campaign.

Emily Campbell, of Snape Wood, will compete in the +87kg class in Tokyo on Monday, August 2.

Her younger sister, Kelsie Campbell, said she was “nervous” but has the “utmost confidence” that she would bring home a medal.

“I get really nervous because I’m really rooting for her but I’m also really excited and can’t wait to see her get back on stage,” she said.

“This is her first Olympics and she has a real shot at a medal here.

“There’s so many factors that will come into it but looking at Emily, her talent and her hardwork and determination, I think she’s more than capable of doing it.

“Whatever the outcome is, we're all going to be so proud of her and I know how hard she’s worked.”

The 23-year-old, who lives in Florida, is flying home early to watch Emily compete with her family in Bulwell.

“It’s going to be surreal seeing someone that I’ve grown up with at the Olympics, but also it’s not too strange as I’ve seen her perform on the biggest stage. She’s going to belong there.”

Kelsie said she had been in regular contact with Emily, saying she “seems to be doing well and enjoying herself”.

Emily enters the tournament as reigning European champion after winning the +90kg category at the European Weightlifting Championships in Moscow earlier this year.

The 27-year-old also won a bronze medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, with a further bronze from the 2019 European Championships to her name.

Her competitors will include world champion Li Wenwen of China and 2016 Olympic bronze-medalist Sarah Robles of the USA

She will also be up against New Zealander Laurel Hubbard, who will become the first ever transgender athlete to compete at an Olympic Games.

Alex Norris, MP Nottingham North, has also voiced his support for Emily: “People from across Nottingham have been watching and rooting for Team GB.”

“On Monday this will be even more so when Bulwell's very own Emily Campbell competes in the weightlifting. Our community is so proud to have an elite athlete living locally and we will be cheering her on all the way."

Nottingham City Council also tweeted a message of good luck: "Good luck Emily! Nottingham is proud of you!"

Viewers in the UK will be able to watch Emily compete from 11.50am.
