Episode three of the new The Summer I Turned Pretty season dropped last night and oh my god. I’m still spiralling. While there certainly were some slower points (why do we care about Taylor’s mum’s financial problems?), two massive bombshells were revealed.
ICYMI, at the end of episode two, (while Belly’s brother was literally banged up in a hospital bed post-coma), our protagonist decided to forgive resident frat boy and confirmed cheater, Jeremiah. In response to their fight being over, manchild Jeremiah decided to PROPOSE. Yep, propose.
There was no ring, no getting down on one knee, just a question, ‘Isabelle Conklin. Will you marry me?’ while a god damn Benson Boone song played in the background. Belly, STAND UP.

Thankfully, episode 3 begins with Jeremiah proposing the right way. On one knee, ring in hand (although they’re in a frat house bedroom – ick). This ring, however, has gotten the internet up in arms, with even the Empire State Building’s official TikTok page poking fun at the teeny tiny diamond.
As Belly’s bestie, Taylor said when she first saw it, “Is this a diamond or a sliver of tin foil?”. Ooft.
Viewers also noticed that Jeremiah (a character who famously doesn’t wear specs) had to put on his glasses to root around in his bedside drawer for the tiny ring.
I’m sure Bellyjere stans would argue that this proposal is “romantic” and “lowkey”. But maybe it’s a sign that two college students (who are 20 and 22) SHOULDN’T GET MARRIED.
Anyway. The couple decide to keep their news (and tiny ring) a secret until after Susannah Fisher’s memorial garden dedication dinner. Because Belly has famously never made Susannah’s days about her in the past. No way.
Conrad decides to show up after all and the whole family (minus Belly and Steven’s dad) sits down at the table. In a sign that Conrad is the superior brother, he orders the salmon entree (the cheapest item) after Laurel announces the dinner is on her card. Jeremiah and his super rich Dad? They order the $75 Surf N’ Turf, of course!!!
As Laurel and Jeremiah and Conrad’s dad Adam share their kids’ accomplishments with the table, Belly decides that right now is the perfect time to drop their engagement bombshell. Her fiancé has just been skewered by his father about being a “super senior” after all.
“We’re getting married… in August,” Belly announces. Her mum immediately asks if it’s a joke. Pregnancy accusations are thrown around the table. Conrad looks like he’s just been stabbed through the stomach with that god damn seafood platter.
I know my frontal lobe has developed because I’m 100 per cent team Laurel here. Jeremiah has no job, no money, owes his Dad $20k and proposed to her outside a hospital after cheating on Belly. WHAT. Laurel asks why the couple doesn’t just move in together or foster a cat. Not commit to matrimony before they’ve even graduated college.
Adam says Jeremiah better not expect his dead mother’s ring. That’s when Belly pulls the teeny tiny ring from her pocket, showing proof to her family and breaking Connie’s heart even further.
Ofc, dinner is immediately ruined. Belly and Jere storm out and still try to make out in front of the restaurant. As Steven says, “Read the room!!!!”.
This is when arguably the most heartbreaking scene in the episode happens. As the families bundle into different cars and Conrad is left shellshocked in front of the restaurant, Radiohead’s “No Surprises” plays, with the pertinent lyric ringing out: “This is my final fit / My final bellyache”.
My final BELLY ACHE. BELLY ACHE. Omfg. I’m sick.
Btw, no one apart from Belly’s friends even know about Jeremiah’s cheating yet. Yah. Messy.
Rumour has it, Conrad is still at the restaurant…
