In recent times, California Governor Gavin Newsom has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of United States President Donald Trump and his administration. On multiple occasions over the past couple of months, Newsom has stood undeterred against Trump and openly challenged him, drawing sharp criticism from him and his Republican allies.
After Trump recently cut SNAP benefits, several people who relied on the services for food expressed widespread resentment. People working closely with the programs also revealed that the current administration had refused to grant permission for access to the SNAP emergency funds, causing more alarm among citizens. While several people are in fear of going hungry for prolonged periods of time, Trump is busy lending billions of dollars to Argentina and renovating the White House, an argument several people have brought up while speaking about Trump’s inability to support the SNAP benefits.
While Trump’s handling of the SNAP benefits has attracted immense criticism, especially from people of the opposition party, Governor Gavin Newsom is one of the few who is actively trying to obstruct Trump’s blatant exploitation of presidential powers. To that effect, on October 29, Newsom announced that the state of California was suing the Trump Administration for suspending the SNAP benefits of the upcoming month despite having funds available.
Many on social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), lauded Gavin Newsom’s efforts while encouraging others in positions of power to rise up against the current Trump administration. One person wrote:
“At least Newsom is doing something for the people in need. We need to see more of that.”
Another person shared a similar sentiment and wrote:
“Gavin Newsom just did what leadership looks like. This is how you fight back when the most vulnerable are being punished.”
At the rate Trump is going right now, it seems he won’t rest until everything is reduced to dust. If the Republicans continue to support him, or worse, vote for him in the upcoming elections, they are just as delusional and foolish as their leader in chief.
