'We need to pull out the stops on boosters before Omicron wave reaches its peak'

Scientists are learning more about the new Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus every day, but we know for certain that it is spreading, it is spreading fast and it has now resulted in people being admitted to hospital.

We also know the best defence against Omicron is the booster jab.

That’s why I’m asking Mirror readers to get yourselves boosted as soon as you can – and if you haven’t had your first or second jab yet, it’s not too late to do that either!

Three doses provide much better protection for you and the people around you against this new variant.

Getting Britain boosted will help us protect the NHS as they approach their winter peak and it will also help us to minimise the disruption caused to people’s lives, livelihoods and liberties as a result of restrictions.

Labour's Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting urged people to get their booster jabs (PA)

We need to pull out all the stops on this. The next few weeks are crucial if we are to get Britain boosted before the Omicron wave hits its peak.

That’s why we support the Government’s ambition to get every adult vaccinated by the end of this month.

We’ve asked them to put a rocket under the booster rollout and they’ve listened. It’s a big ambition.

Vaccination on this scale has never been achieved before. But the NHS will be moving heaven and earth to pull it off and they’ll have Labour’s full support. Let’s make sure they know we’re all behind them.

All of us have a part to play. The vaccine is safe and effective.

I’ve had my first two jabs and I’ll be getting my booster this week.

We want to make sure that everyone can enjoy Christmas safely this year, as well as protecting our NHS.

So let’s boost Britain as a Christmas present for our country.
