Tory mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey unveiled his “get real” approach to fighting crime today in his first big pitch for City Hall.

He called for tougher punishments for carrying knives and pledged to solve London’s “crime emergency” with just eight months to go until he takes on Sadiq Khan.

Mr Bailey, below, told the Tory conference violent crime was “destroying lives and plaguing London”.

He added: “I have a plan to make our streets safe, to call for mandatory sentences for those who carry knives and acid on the first offence. We need a ‘get real’ approach.”

He claimed Mr Khan was “neglecting” crime in London, saying: “Since I last stood in front of you last year, more than 100 people have been murdered in our capital city.

"Every victim is a Londoner who has been failed by their Mayor.”

He also pledged to fund a record number of police and Operation London Ceasefire, a US-style anti-gangs programme.
