'We need to get out of this f***ing league!' Wrexham's Hollywood owners stunned as players mop pitch and match abandoned

Wrexham's trip to National League rivals Aldershot ended in frustration on Saturday afternoon, after the match was abandoned due to a water-logged pitch.

The visitors were 2-0 up at the EBB Stadium, courtesy of first-half strikes from Jake Hyde and Paul Mullin, but prolonged heavy rain resulted in nightmare conditions for both sides.

Ben Tozer and Luke Young were forced off early due to injury, and the contest was thrown into doubt at half-time as officials carried out a pitch inspection.

However, the second half lasted just six minutes, with ironically-named referee Sunny Gill deciding to call the contest off.

Wrexham's players, clearly keen to carry on given their two-goal lead, were pictured doing their bit to try and clear the water off the playing surface, but it wasn't enough to prevent the game being called off, much to the frustration of the travelling 467 fans.

Co-owner Rob McElhenney wasn't too happy either, and took to Twitter to vent his own frustrations.

He wrote: "I’m watching our PLAYERS MOP THE FIELD to continue the game. I’ve never seen anything like it. Official statement from the Co-chairman: “We need to get out of this f***ing league.”

Despite making some eye-catching signings in the summer transfer window on the back of their high-profile takeover by McElhenney and Hollywood pal Ryan Reynolds, Wrexham have enjoyed a somewhat mixed start to the season.

Their bid to get Wrexham back into Football League for the first time since 2008 has seen Phil Parkinson's side start with a run of three wins, three draws and two defeats so far.

Their next game sees them return to the Racecourse on Tuesday night to take on high-flying Chesterfield, a side that have aspirations for a promotion push themselves this season.
