"We must protect the NHS" - on the general election campaign trail in Leicester

In Leicester the main concern for voters was the NHS, lack of GPs appointments and the rise in homelessness.

Labour strongly held the seats in Leicester South, East and West while the Conservatives had control of Leicester North-West.

We spoke to many voters in Leicester city centre, including the markets, who are also concerned about business.

Here's what they had to say...

Vicki Morris, fruit and veg stall owner

The NHS is the main concern for me during this election.

My grandson has cerebral palsy and he needed an operation to clear his airways, it was cancelled 12 times, he finally had the surgery a year later.

But imagine having a gobstopper sweet stuck in your throat.

He only had a small space in his throat to breathe.

We found out this was the problem when we took him to the Ear, Throat and Nose department at the hospital, here we then discovered he had sepsis .

The next Government also needs to improve the infrastructure in Leicester.

There is a problem with homelessness in Leicester.

At night, the market is covered with homeless people sleeping here because there is nowhere else for them to go.

John Forsyth, 85, former textile business owner now retired

The thing that concerns people like me is the economy and how it is struggling.

If the economy goes, obviously our pensions are lost.

I have a lack of confidence in the financial situation with this economy.

Another main concern for me is the NHS.

The Government needs to protect the NHS. People are living longer and it is putting pressure on the NHS and its staff.

Up until a few years ago I never needed to use the NHS thankfully, but as I have gotten older I have used it more.

Only today I rang the GP surgery and after listening to music whilst on hold for a while, I never actually got through to anyone.

I only rang to find out about the results of my blood test. It is becoming harder to get GP appointments.

Liberty Emmerson, 22, student at De Montfort University

I am without a doubt voting Labour .

There is no way I support the Tories, because with them in power we are living in a country where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

The people at the top in this country get big bonuses and pay little taxes.

Take Grenfell - the wrong people got blamed.

Residents of Glenfell were blamed, they were told to stay put in the burning building, but imagine being in that situation, the firefighters also had the blame put on them, but they did what they could too.

The NHS is incredibly important, the amount of people they have to care for is amazing.

For me, it is personally important during this election.

My gran is hooked up to Oxygen 24/7, if it wasn’t for the NHS, my gran wouldn’t be here today.

Patricia Measures, 66, British Gas worker from Blaby

I am disappointed in Boris, I am not happy with him or his policies.

This is the first time ever I will be voting Labour, as will my children.

The NHS is fantastic but we need to make sure it is financially stable.

My sister who has cancer has been well-cared for by the NHS.

I worked for a patient transport ambulance service in the offices for 14 years.

Two years ago it went to tender and given to another company, in Lincoln, I didn’t want to move to Lincoln, even though it was offered.

I was so passionate about the job and I loved talking to patients.

A move like this affects local people and local jobs.

Pensions is another area that is important to me.

I am working because I know there will be some income coming in for me every month, which will help top up my state pension.

Dr Purvi Mali, 34, lecturer

We have been hearing a lot at the moment about what if going on in the elections and with Brexit but we need to make sure we make a decision that will give us a solution at the end.

We need a person who is credible to make correct decisions.

One of the important policies for me is education.

I have done four degrees but whilst doing my last degree, I had a child and I was not given any financial support from the Government.

This meant I had to work part-time so I was financially stable, as I was unable to get a scholarship.

There is not enough financial support from the Government for university students.

Derek Liburd, 61, market stall worker

The Government suddenly called for an election, but like many people probably out there, I struggle to understand it.

But what I do know is, we need more help here in Leicester, especially businesses.

A few months ago Leicester City Market would have been busy with stalls.

There were many Indian stall holders who have left now because business has gone down.

We are only a few months away from Christmas and we are not really that busy, like we should be.

The city is really integrated, I hope it continues. Everyone is really hard-working.

The Government needs to invest more in the economy and also needs to invest more to help the homeless, there is nowhere for them to go.
