We must not let Lyra McKee die in vain and need to nuture the peace process

The life of young journalist Lyra McKee was cruelly cut short on Thursday night.

She was murdered by a masked gunman while covering rioting in Derry.

The bullet which killed her took a daughter from her parents, a soulmate from her partner and robbed journalism of a woman of extraordinary talent and promise.

It is a testament to Lyra that the leaders of Sinn Fein and the DUP stood side by side at a vigil in her honour.

The violence in Derry is a reminder of the fragility of the situation in Northern Ireland.

Lyra McKee: Police release CCTV footage of suspected gunman 'opening fire'

Incredible progress has been made in the 21 years since the Good Friday Agreement that ended the Troubles.

But in the past few months, there has been a worrying increase in activity by dissident Republican groups.

For Lyra not to have died in vain, we must nurture the peace process by continuing the dialogue and stamping out the flickering flames of violence. The stability and security was hard won.

It could be lost far too quickly.
