"We mistakenly followed Guardiola for 20 years!" - Max Allegri on Man City boss' philosophy

Ex-Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri is pleased that counter attacking is on the rise in football and believes Pep Guardiola's 'tiki-taka' philosophy wasn't for everyone.

The current Man City manager moulded Barcelona into one of the greatest teams in history between 2008 and 2012 using his possession-based style of play.

Guardiola lifted 14 major trophies with players such as Lionel Messi, Xavi and Iniesta thriving under his leadership.

The Catalan's achievements continued in Germany with Bayern Munich and in England with City, but Allegri feels his tactics could becoming outdated as counter-attacking teams on the rise.

"I'm seeing a great return for the counter-attack," he told Italain outlet Corriere della Sera.

"We mistakenly followed Guardiola for 20 years. Guardiola's football was not for everyone.

"You have to have Iniesta, Xavi and Messi. We took a subject that related only to them as a lesson for everyone.

"When I hear [Arrigo] Sacchi talking bout keeping the ball and having pro-active attitudes, I don't understand what he's saying and it annoys me.

"Why should playing vertically not be pro-active football?"

Allegri has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League and could go head to head against Guardiola next season.

The Italian admitted to taking English lessons in Milan but revealed he had no plans to return to management until next season amid links to both the Arsenal and Manchester United job.
