'We'll sing when we want': Thomas Tuchel responds to teasing after dig at England fans

Thomas Tuchel has responded to the England fans in Latvia who hit back at his criticism of their support at Wembley.

After Thursday’s 3-0 friendly win over Wales, the Three Lions boss came out and criticised the atmosphere in the second half.

He said Wembley had been “silent” and questioned why he could only hear the Welsh fans singing.

That drew criticism from some supporters, who felt they were being unfairly called out.

In Latvia, where England won 5-0 to seal qualification for next summer’s World Cup, many of the 2,500 travelling fans sang playful chants by way of retort, including, “Thomas Tuchel, we’ll sing when we want”, and asking the England manager, “Are we loud enough for you?”.

Tuchel was asked for his reaction after the match, having been spotted smiling wryly and gesturing a thumbs-up to the fans.

“I got some stick in the first half,” Tuchel joked. “Fair enough and well done. Good sense of humour and no problem.”

He said of those fans who had made the trip to Riga: “Yes, it was brilliant. Brilliant support from start to finish.”

Harry Kane, who scored twice, described the England support in Latvia as having been “amazing”.

He said: “I know Thomas came out after the last game and said the fans weren’t great, but I don’t think you can question our away support ever.

“The way they were tonight was fantastic. And look, we qualified for another major tournament.

“America is going to be a special place to play. Credit to them for travelling out here and showing their support.”

Tuchel said of England confirming their World Cup place: “It is our dream to go to America and now we have made it, and we made it with another good performance and top result. Six wins and clean sheets, so we are very happy.

“ We are dominant in games and hungry, we invest against the ball. We have a lot of ball wins. The group is a very good group.”
