'We'll nurse him back in' - Bristol City CEO on Nigel Pearson's return to the dugout

Bristol City will welcome back Nigel Pearson at the Robins High Performance Centre once again on Tuesday with CEO Richard Gould giving some further insight into how the manager is faring.

The Robins boss will take training for the first time since it was announced on September 28 that the 58-year-old was suffering from Covid-19, and with Pearson absent from the dugout for two games on the road.

In his leave, City lost at Millwall but won at Peterborough United with assistant manager and stand-in Curtis Fleming recording a 50/50 win rate.

Pearson now readies his team for City to try and win a home game for the first time since January 26, though the opposition at the weekend makes this a very tough task.

"He's back in tomorrow [Tuesday]. We're nursing him back in gently," explained Gould to Geoff Twentyman on the weekly Sound of the City radio programme.

"Yep, absolutely [he's going to have a full recovery]. He's on the road back. We always want to be careful because you never quite know what direction these things can take.

"And it can sometimes be a complicated recovery. But he's sounding much more chipper and he's in tomorrow [Tuesday] looking forward to the Bournemouth game," said the CEO.

Fleming stood in for the manager in the last two games and Gould explained that Pearson has been on the phone to his assistants a lot over the last days.

There was 'good debate and discussion', with Keith Downing and Paul Simpson also helping, according to Gould.

But ahead of Saturday's big game against the so far unbeaten Bournemouth, the main man will be at the helm once again and picking up the reins once more. The focus is on getting a home victory at long last.

Bristol Live was in attendance at the Hen and Chicken on North Street on Monday evening to hear further from Gould and Fleming, and there was an interesting insight from the former Middlesbrough defender into his relationship with Pearson and how the City boss has suprised a few since becoming a manager.

Meanwhile, Gould added too that the club is not considering adding a fan representative to the board at the club, as relationship with the fans was discussed on the Sound of the City radio programme, though the club has started a fresh new former players association and announced a memorandum of understanding with the Bristol City Supporters Club and Trust.

"Being a director of a club or any organisation that has financial challenges is a big responsibility and it comes with a whole host of responsibilities that we wouldn't want to thrust upon somebody who was a supporter or fan without the wherewithal to back that up," he said.
