'We keep fighting until the end' - Jamaal Lascelles' message of defiance from dressing room

Jamaal Lascelles believes that Newcastle United's last gasp fight back against Aston Villa proves that Toon players are up for the relegation battle in the Premier League.

It's now three draws in a row for the Magpies, and they face a nervous wait over the weekend for the results to come in from Fulham's home game with Manchester City and Brighton & Hove Albion's visit to Southampton.

However, Lascelles feels that he and his team-mates should be celebrating a win of their own after being held by Villa at St James' Park.

Lascelles said: "Over the course of the game I would not say it was a fair result. I thought we were the better team.

"I thought we had the better chances.

"It was a difficult game but in terms of chances created we created the most. Then the one chance they had, it's a deflection that goes in.

"I guess that's football but we had to keep fighting until the end, and we did."

Newcastle's tally of 28 points from 28 matches leaves them in dire trouble but Lascelles is pleased with the way his side are playing, if not the final results.

Lascelles, speaking to BT Sports, added: "I thought we played some good football and defensively we were pretty solid all game.

"We were on the front foot and creating chances.

"The chances just weren't going into the back of the net and the one chance they had gets a deflection and goes in. It was hard to take.

"At the end, we threw everything forward and we got a bit of luck back ourselves."

And reflecting on his powerful headed equaliser which grabbed what could be a vital point, the skipper reflected: "It was a great ball from Jacob Murphy's cross and I just went for it.

"Considering we were losing 1-0 it was a good point to take."
