"We just have to keep believing", Steve Bruce's vow after League Cup exit last night

Steve Bruce says his side did not do much wrong in their League Cup exit against Burnley - despite deep disappointment for supporters last night.

The Magpies wasted good chances in normal time before losing 4-3 on penalties with Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin missing from the spot.

Bruce tried to take some positives from the shoot-out defeat and said in his post-game Press conference.

Bruce said: “We played very well on the night, I have to say.

"I can't really remember my goalkeeper having to make a save.

"If I'm being critical, we created some great chances, but didn't take them and unfortunately for us, it's proved costly.

"But I couldn't fault the way we played.

"There were a lot of very, very good performances out there."

Bruce tried to keep the defeat in context as his team were eliminated at the second round stage for the second time in three years, again on penalties like the clash with Leicester City back in 2019.

On a night when Jeff Hendrick's close range miss cost Bruce's side dear, he emerged after the match to tell reporters: "We haven't done a lot wrong even though we haven't won yet.

"Okay, we've gone out of the cup, but we didn't lose tonight.

"We've seen a few positives. I enjoyed watching us play, I thought we were a threat all night, I thought we played some good stuff at times, but we didn't get the rub of the green that you need.

"We just have to keep believing that it will turn round.

"We've only been going two weeks, so we'll look forward to the weekend."
