'We haven't seen the best of him yet' - Olivier Bernard's verdict on Allan Saint-Maximin

Olivier Bernard believes Newcastle United fans have not seen the best of Allan Saint-Maximin yet.

The 22-year-old has impressed and at times frustrated on Tyneside since completing his summer switch from Nice.

Saint-Maximin has quickly established himself as a key player under Steve Bruce, and has so far netted twice in black and white.

The French forward received the FA Cup goal of the round award for his emphatic extra-time winner at Oxford United on Tuesday.

Speaking on BBC's Newcastle United podcast with presenter Simon Pryde, former Magpie defender Bernard believes Saint-Maximin has the potential to develop into one of the best wingers in the Premier League.

However, the former left-back stressed the 22-year-old is still adjusting to English football and believes it his "attitude" off the ball which will determine whether he is a success at St James' Park.

Bernard said: "I met him more when he was in Nice, and then here I haven't had the chance to be fair.

"He's a player that is very confident about his ability, very composed on the ball, technically very good.

"For him, I just think it's a question of willingness and attitude on the pitch because sometimes he can look a bit lazy.

"On the ball, he will become one of the better wingers in the league."

Saint-Maximin enjoyed spells at Saint Etienne, Monaco and Nice before sealing his move to United.

The 22-year-old has suffered a recurring hamstring injury and has spoken previously of the adjustment he is having to make to English football.

Bernard echoed this view, and believes Magpies' supporters will see an improved Saint-Maximin next season.

Bernard added: "I think we haven't seen the best of him yet. I followed him for the past three years. What he can do on the pitch on his day, he'll go with the best wingers in the league.

"But he did find it hard to find the tempo in England, and he is still adjusting to the football.

"I believe next season will be an even better player for me."
