We have to hang in there and follow the science-led advice on Coronavirus

Anyone unsure of the dangers of Covid-19 should read how this terrible disease devastated Mark Gillan’s family.

The 53-year-old died earlier this year, shortly after contracting the virus.

His widow Jan says she and their three daughters have had their lives “ripped apart”.

Her story is a warning to others not to treat the risk of infection lightly and her words should be taken on board by anyone questioning the need for the restrictions announced yesterday.

It is understandable if we sometimes feel exhausted by the impact this pandemic has had on our way of life.

The economy is on its knees and, as we approach the final quarter of 2020, the months ahead are surrounded by uncertainty.

But we have to hang in there and follow the science-led advice given by both the Scottish and UK Governments.

Our political leaders must do everything they can to save jobs and help families cope with what could be a long, cold winter.

The UK Government could start by extending the furlough scheme, following in the footsteps of other European nations.

What is clear is that dealing with this virus will continue to be part of all our lives for some time to come.

The best way to do that will be to stick together, look out for our families, our friends and our neighbours and do the right thing for everyone’s health and safety.

Follow the rules and we’ll get there.
