'We have to bring our A-game' - Eddie Howe makes claim ahead of Newcastle's trip to Liverpool

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is looking forward to the challenge that comes with taking on Liverpool in front of a capacity Anfield crowd.

The Magpies make the trip to Merseyside on Thursday night as Liverpool look to close the gap at the top of the Premier League back to just a single point.

Liverpool are in great form having won their last five games in the Premier League while Newcastle are in desperate need of a win to give them hope of pulling out of the relegation zone.

Newcastle manager Howe is seeing the game at Anfield as an opportunity to take a look at his players in what is one of the toughest tests in world football.

"It's a big challenge for us but one that we're going to look forward to," said Howe.

" Liverpool are in outstanding form, their attacking players are certainly linking really well at the moment.

"I would describe it as a great opportunity to face the best teams in the land, to see where we are, to see how much we can impose ourselves on them, and I think that's how we have to look at it. These are fantastic occasions.

"Anfield on a night game will be a great atmosphere, a brilliant occasion, but we have to bring our A-game."

Newcastle currently sit joint-bottom of the Premier League but three points at Anfield could see them climb out of the drop zone.

Liverpool know the pressure is on and only a win would suffice as they need to keep ground with Manchester City - who beat Leeds United 7-0 on Tuesday night.
