‘We have an Insurrection Act for a reason’: Furious Trump wants to override judges, force his troops into cities using emergency law from 1807

Donald Trump hates being told he can’t do something. From his perspective, it’s an outrage that some pesky judges care about silly things like “the law” and “the Constitution” and “citizens’ rights”. After all, he’s constantly hinting that he’d be happier as America’s dictator rather than its democratically elected president, so why should anyone stand in his way?

Enter District Judge Karin Immergut – a Trump appointee no less – who just stepped in to block Trump’s insane and terrifying plans to sic the U.S. military on U.S. citizens. This comes as Trump and his team are frantically trying to paint Portland as a chaotic “warzone”, despite reality, facts, and evidence insisting otherwise.

Judge Immergut succintly described Trump’s vision of a Mad Max-style Portland as “untethered to facts” and blocked the deployment of troops, saying:

“This country has a longstanding and foundational tradition of resistance to government overreach, especially in the form of military intrusion into civil affairs. … This historical tradition boils down to a simple proposition: this is a nation of Constitutional law, not martial law.”

Trump promptly flipped his lid and said Immergut “ought to be ashamed of himself” (Trump apparently not realizing she’s a woman).

Insurrection!

But, with his broken brain buzzing with apocalyptic fantasies of Portland in flames, Trump is now saying he’s considering invoking the Insurrection Act, telling reporters, “we have an Insurrection Act for a reason”.

This law, passed in 1807, is an extremely rarely used piece of legislation that allows the president to mobilize the U.S. military as civilian law enforcement. The Act is almost never invoked, with the last instance in 1992 in response to the Los Angeles riots.

Before that, it was used on multiple occasions during the 1960s and 1950s by Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson during the Civil Rights Movement as a way to enforce compliance with desegregation and protect demonstrators from racist local cops.

But Trump seems eager to “save” Portland, insisting that it’s been “on fire for years” and that “I think that’s all insurrection. I really think that’s really criminal insurrection.”

So, frankly, it looks like he’s gearing up to officially dub any resistance to his ICE goons as an official insurrection against the nation, to which he can deploy soldiers armed with live ammunition to stamp on any dissent. Either way, it sure sounds like the streets of Portland are about to get a whole lot more dangerous.
