'We have all learned from last year' - Nottingham student areas record lowest Covid rate in city

Nottingham students said they "will just get on with their lives" while the infection rates for their most popular areas remain low.

Some are determined to make the most of their student experience, and gave a number of reasons for why the Covid rates are 'surprisingly' low.

It comes after concerns were raised around the high Covid rates in popular student areas including Arboretum, Lenton, and the City Campus.

However, Arboretum is now ranked as the second least infected neighbourhood in the city with just 13 positive cases, becoming one of the three Nottingham areas that have turned green on the Home Office Covid map.

This means that Lenton, The Park & Castle and Arboretum are the only areas that have under 49 cases.

Elsewhere in the city, the infection rates remain in the hundreds.

Masters student Faith Neale, who live sin Arboretum, said: "I am surprised that they are so low because everyone just seems to be normal.

"It looks like everyone is just getting on with their lives.

"People are just being themselves."

However, the 21-year-old has given a reason for this and added: "I think that most people just had it in the first weeks and now they just know they have had it.

"It is not over yet, but I think that we will just have to learn to live with it at some point."

It is after vibrant scenes that saw Nottingham's streets rammed as students celebrated their return to the city on Freshers' Week.

Large groups were seen queuing outside bars to enjoy a few drinks with their friends before heading to clubs last month.

Other students, however, said they are more cautious when they go out and have noticed a shift in the collective behaviour compared to last year.

Second year student Peter Mwangi, who lives in Arboretum, 22, added: "I think it is partly because many people are a lot more cautious this year.

"We have all learned from last year."

Peter, who also works in Rock City, said: "You can see it in clubs and other hospitality venues that there are measures in place to protect everyone.

"It is a lot more controlled.

"But It is also because a lot of us are now vaccinated."

Third year student Pankhuri, 22, added: "I think it is because it has become a part of our lives already.

"We are all respecting the rules - it is almost a protocol I would say."

In a media briefing held on October 15, Lucy Hubber, Director of Public Health at Nottingham City Council, said: "The universities have been absolutely outstanding around the work that they did before students came back.

"So, they were giving lots of messages right through from June, July, up until the day the students came back around encouraging good practice, participation in testing and vaccination.

"And I think that's also showing in those figures as well.

"Not just thank you to the young people but thank you to our partners across the universities for the tremendous work that they have undertaken, and we're seeing the benefits of that in our figures and reduced transmission in those age groups."

The latest Home Office figures show the case rate per 100,000 people for 7–day period ending on October 17.

The least affected areas across the city are (rates of infections per 100,000 people):

The Park & Castle (90.3)

Arboretum, Forest & Trent University (93.7)

Lenton & Dunkirk (97.6)

Radford (103.8)

St Ann's West (124.3)

City Centre & Trent Bridge (144.0)

St Ann's East (157.5)

University Park, Lenton Abbey & Jubilee Campus (173.1)
