'We had to tell them mummy died' – family of murdered mum say 'biggest question is why'

As a devoted mum, a supportive sister, a loving daughter and a caring friend, Kelly Worgan meant the world to so many people.

And her murder, committed by her husband George Worgan at their home in Avonmouth, continues to have a profound and enduring impact on her family and community.

Not least on her children, aged four and five, who lost their mum at the hands of their father in an attack described as shockingly out-of-character and not premeditated.

Worgan is now in jail. He was Father-of-two who strangled wife left note for children saying 'Daddy loves you' and will have to serve a minimum of 12 and a half years in prison.

However the loss of Kelly, who was a committed mum with a "bubbly" personality, will affect those who knew her forever.

Kelly was described as "the bright light during anyone's darkest day, the life and soul of everything" following her death.

The 33-year-old was said to be a "fantastic mother", and her natural ability to nurture benefited her younger sister Hannah, who said Kelly had been like a second mother to her growing up.

'He didn’t just take Kelly’s life, he took a part of me'

Hannah’s words were read out in court, detailing her struggle to continue her studies after being told what had happened to her sister.

Hannah said: "Since Kelly’s death I have been in emotional turmoil and I questioned whether I could carry on with my studies.

"But, my dad reminded me of how proud Kelly was that I was doing a degree and that made me keep going.

Also adding: "He didn’t just take Kelly’s life, he took a part of me with her."

During the sentencing at Bristol Crown Court the effect Worgan's crime had on all who knew Kelly was reiterated time and again by the judge and both the defence and prosecution barristers.

But the consequences of this devastating crime were never more evident than when the words of Kelly's parents were spoken in court.

'We had to tell them their mummy had died'

Paul and Glynnis Holder spoke of the "nightmare" they had been plunged into since their daughter was killed on November 28, 2018.

As grandparents, they had the unimaginable duty of breaking the news of their mum’s death to her children, who were unable to understand why all of their family were crying.

Glynnis said: "We had to tell them their mummy had died.

"Now neither of the children want to sleep in their own bed and ask to go to her grave so they can talk to her."

Due to the unpredictable nature of Kelly's murder, and the lack of an explanation from Worgan as to what happened that day, many have been left still asking why he killed her.

Kelly's mum Glynnis Holder, said: "The biggest question we have is why? We trusted him and treated him as a son and as a part of our family. We now struggle with the concept of who we can trust."

Judge Blair, who presided over the hearing, said the evidence shows there was no indication such an awful crime was about to be committed.

The couple were in financial difficulties, but the strain on their relationship did not go anywhere near to explaining the outburst of violence which caused Kelly's death. There was no history of domestic violence nor any history of violence of any kind in Worgan's past.

Judge Blair attempted to reassure the family with this fact. He said: "I feel it is important to state publicly that there was nothing on earth that could have alerted those who knew Kelly that such an awful crime was about to be committed, they have no reason to blame themselves."

Kelly's funeral took place on January 2, 2019 at St Andrews Church. Following the tragedy, family members set up a Go Fund Me page to raise funds for a fitting wake.

Those who knew Kelly are now left with the "amazing memories" they had with her.

In a tribute paid to Kelly by her sister, Hannah said: "To a dear daughter, sister and mother to her children. Tragically taken from us. Who will always be in our hearts and prayers. Never to be forgotten."
