'We had to close the cafe early when the thermometer hit 52C and it only stopped there because it can't go any higher'

A popular Independent coffee shop and café in the heart of Brynhyfryd has shared the shocking fact which meant it had to close its doors early over health and safety concerns.

The decision was made after the temperature in the kitchen at the Haystack cafe, which also runs a popular bakery upstairs, shot to over fifty degrees Celsius.

It comes after the Met Office issued a four-day amber weather warning for extreme heat in Wales.

Andrea Davies joined the Haystack Café back in September last year as its head chef.

She said: "We have found it really difficult to keep cool and yesterday it just got to a point where it was uncomfortable"

Upon checking the temperature in the kitchen, Andrea discovered it was too high even for their thermometer to record.

"We initially laughed it off because every one of the staff enjoys where we work. The owners tried everything, they brought down two air conditioning units and an air mover to try and keep the kitchen cool," said the 28-year-old.

With the Haystack Bakery still operating upstairs in the venue, Andrea said it was challenging not just inside the kitchen.

"It was more difficult to decorate cakes but they also had to keep items chilled to be safe"

Owners Bethan Roberts and Liam Lazarus, who also run the popular Dark Horse venue in Mumbles, made the decision to close the business early.

"It was nice that the owners care so much about the staff, they decided not to have us work through the heat and we are grateful for it"

The Haystack Café is not the only venue to struggle with the ongoing heatwave with Bluebell Coffee and Kitchen also closing its doors yesterday.
