'We had a poor pre-season' - Alan Hardy on how Notts County's summer contributed to relegation

Owner Alan Hardy says Notts County's disastrous relegation campaign has been hampered by poor pre-season regime that ultimate cost the squad in injuries.

The Magpies were relegated from the Football League on Saturday for the first time in their 157-year history following defeat away at Swindon.

Neal Ardley's side were, for 11 minutes, on their way to pulling of one of the greatest escapes at the bottom of League Two, until three second half Swindon goals turned the game on it's head.

"We started this season expecting great things," said Hardy, speaking to BBC Radio Nottingham.

"But the season started how the last one finished.

"Our form from the (last) January transfer window to the summer was poor, and we had a poor summer.

"The squad was imbalanced.

"We had a poor preseason.

'Inconceivable' - Mark Stallard delivers damning verdict on Notts County's campaign

"I had a meeting with medical scientists and physios a few months ago because I wanted to know why we had so many injuries.

"They showed me the stats and last season, when we had a strong pre-season, we had something like 47 or 49 training days missed.

"This season we have had three times that amount. They put it down to the fact that the players had the wrong type of pre-season, a bad pre-season.

"I don't know. I am not a medical expert.

"Then we didn't start the season well. There have been lots of things wrong."
