'We got our beautiful boy back' - body found in River Tyne believed to be Alex Johnson

The body pulled from the River Tyne is believed to be missing Alex Johnson.

Popular 24-year-old Alex, from Chester-le-Street , was believed to have fallen from the bridge in the early hours of April 16.

Desperate loved ones were joined by concerned members of the public on several searches along the river.

Emergency services were scrambled on the Newcastle Quayside near to the Tyne Bridge on Wednesday morning after a body was spotted in the water.

Formal identification is yet to take place, but police believe it to be missing Alex Johnson.

And devastated sister Ashleigh Marr has posted an emotional thank you on social media to all who helped in the search, insisting her beloved brother is now "resting".

She wrote: "We are receiving lots of messages, and I would like to let all of Alex Johnson's friends [know] myself before they read it in the news.

"Today we got our beautiful boy back. We have visited him and he’s resting now.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "At 9.15am today [Wednesday] we received a report of a body in the Tyne.

"Officers and emergency services attended the scene where they recovered the body from the river.

"Formal identification is yet to take place and an investigation into how the body came to be in the river is under way."
