'We don't yet know': Nicola Sturgeon rejects claims schools will reopen in three weeks

Nicola Sturgeon has rejected claims that schools are set reopen in three weeks, amid reports some pupils could be headed back to the classroom.

The Sunday Times reported government ministers have drawn up a three-phase plan to lift the coronavirus lockdown that would see schools reopen as early as May 11.

Other publications, including BuzzFeed and The Sun, have similarly published details of a lockdown exit strategy that would see restrictions gradually relaxed.

According to The Times, primary school children and secondary school students set to sit important exams would be invited back, with Johnson set to be given three dates for schools reopening: May 11, June 1 or the start of September.

In the wake of the reports, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has also warned that the Scottish Government will not rush to make any judgments on reopening the country.

Responding to the Sunday Times frontpage, revealing "the cabinet's plan for schools to reopen in three weeks", she said: "Decisions need to be solidly based and not premature. We don’t yet know what will be possible and when.

"The Scottish Government will set out asap the factors that will guide decisions, but as/when we lift restrictions, we must be able to suppress the virus in different ways e.g. test, trace, isolate."

In a statement circulated on the Department for Education's official Twitter page late last night, a spokesperson said: "No decision has been made on a timetable for re-opening schools.

"Schools remain closed until further notice, except for children of critical workers and the most vulnerable children.

"Schools will only re-open when the scientific advice indicates it is the right time to do so."

The UK's Education Secretary Gavin Williamson also announced that the Government have made "no decision" on when schools will be reopened.

He tweeted: "I can reassure schools and parents that they will only reopen when the scientific advice indicates it is the right time to do so."
