'We don't have time to clown around': Police break up large group using circus equipment in Platt Fields Park

Police have been called to yet another breach of coronavirus restrictions - this time involving circus equipment.

Officers were called to a gathering at Platt Fields Park on Wilmslow Road in Fallowfield, on Saturday (August 22).

When they attended, they found a large group of people and 'numerous' pieces of circus equipment, GMP said on social media.

"The group has been dispersed. Whilst these matters seem trivial, officers don't have time to clown around.

"Attending these calls is no small feet and ties up our resources when needed elsewhere."

The latest breach comes as 650 incidents were reported to Greater Manchester Police this afternoon alone.

Around 55 of those calls related to breaches of lockdown restrictions, the force said.

On Friday, police broke up a children's party and an engagement bash, which were being held in breach of coronavirus restrictions.

GMP said officers found three families in a private garden in Swinton, celebrating a child's birthday.

They also went to a house in Rochdale, where people were celebrating an engagement.

In both cases the homeowner was fined.

Officers had to shut Wilmslow Road twice during the last week, after large crowds congregated in the area.

GMP said missiles were thrown at officers, fireworks were let off from car roofs and there was reports of dangerous driving.

The force said the gatherings put people at risk, and diverted resources away from other potentially serious incidents.

Police say they are continuing to attend a whole range of incidents across Greater Manchester this weekend, and are prioritising the most serious and critical incidents first.
