‘We do that to the people we think will tip more’: Texas woman goes to hibachi. Then the chef starts giving away her extra meat to other customers

A woman on TikTok sparked debate after claiming a hibachi chef gave away the extra meat she paid for to other customers at the table.

In a video that has garnered over 770,000 views, user Daniella (@daniellalahermosaa) shared her frustration. “When you’re at hibachi genuinely trying not to tweak out because the chef is giving the extra meat from your order to other people instead of hooking you up,” she wrote in a caption layered over the footage.

Do Hibachis regularly ‘split’ meals between people?

The simple answer is that hibachi chefs often split meat evenly between everyone at the table. Extra portions may get distributed unintentionally. In many cases, chefs also offer food across the table as a way to connect with the entire group, especially when tips are pooled or expected from each guest.

It often depends on the restaurant’s policy and the chemistry of the table. Some hibachi spots allow customers to order individual large portions. However, even then, chefs may default to sharing unless specifically told otherwise.

While the performance is a key part of the hibachi experience, it’s reasonable for diners to expect the food they paid for, especially if they’ve ordered extras. To avoid misunderstandings, it’s smart to clarify any special requests up front with the chef or server. Or, opt to sit at a standard table and order hibachi from the kitchen instead.

The clip triggered mixed reactions.

“As a former hibachi chef, we do that to the people we think will tip more. Sorry for judging,” one user admitted in the comments.

While hibachi dining blends performance with cuisine, many pointed out that tipping expectations shouldn’t override basic fairness. “It’s not right to shortchange someone just because they look like they won’t tip well,” one viewer argued.

Another commenter questioned the lack of confrontation: “Why don’t y’all ever speak up for yourselves?”

Some chimed in with similar experiences. “I ordered extra steak and noodles—why did they split it up with a family of four just because they said they wanted some after seeing it?” one TikTok user wrote.

Others offered practical advice: “Pro tip—I never sit at the hibachi table. We sit at a regular table and order hibachi. You actually get your portions and don’t gotta deal with eight other people crammed next to you.”

For diners who want to avoid their food being portioned out to strangers, skipping the communal hibachi table and ordering from the regular menu may be the best bet.
