'We do have some history': Top cop says man shot by officers was well known to police

Commissioner Dawson said an Internal Affairs Unit investigation was underway.

Police Commissioner Chris Dawson has confirmed the man killed by police in the Perth suburb of Beechboro yesterday was well known to them, and they had gone to the house numerous times.

Commissioner Dawson also revealed three shots had been fired by an officer after police responded to a report of family violence by the man's father and sister.

Police said the man, Ly Tong, aged in his 30s, had confronted them when they arrived about 4:30pm Thursday.

The house remains cordoned off and a WA Police investigation overseen by the Internal Affairs Unit has begun.

Commissioner Dawson told reporters police were familiar with the home.

"The address has been attended by police on quite a number of occasions previously," he said.

"We do have some history regarding activities at that house and … I wish to offer condolences to the family involved in the loss of life, but the person who is deceased is well known to police."

He added the officer who fired the shots was yet to be interviewed.

"I can't go any further than that because what actually took place within the house itself is very much a current investigation which is incomplete," he said.

Police Union president Harry Arnott, who went to the scene yesterday, said the officers involved were "coping well given what they have been through".

The man's sister, Oanh Tong, yesterday suggested her brother was holding a knife before he was shot by officers, but said police were to blame for his death.

"I feel like my brother was threatened, that's why he held a knife," she said.
