Few things bring me the same amount of joy that something like the Mamma Mia movies do. They’re happy, brilliant, and I love to just lose myself in this messy mother/daughter relationship. Meaning I’ve been not so patiently waiting for news on a third film.
To set the scene: One of the first things I ever pitched here at The Mary Sue was about my love for Mamma Mia. So this love runs deep and it pleases me to say that Amanda Seyfried has announced that that third movie I’ve been hoping for is happening after all! We can truly dance and jive, having the time of our lives.
While talking with Deadline at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Seyfried said that she thinks the third film is happening. When a reporter said that they read it was happening, Seyfried joked that it was because the entire cast said they’d make another film but she went on to share that it all comes down to studio timing. “And story,” she said.
So what does this mean? Should I get my hopes up?
It is interesting what Seyfried said about the studio having to prioritize one film over another. When it comes to bigger films, as Seyfried said, studios have to slot in what they think will be a hit for them and she claims that Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again took a slot that could have belonged to Wicked, which then was released 6 years later.
With Wicked: For Good slated to release in November, I hope that doesn’t mean we have 6 more years until a third Mamma Mia film but if that does happen and we end up with one Mamma Mia movie for (roughly) every 10 years, then so be it. I will be sat in the theater from now until that movie starts playing because I just want more!
