“We couldn’t be happier": Historic Manchester pub reopens following six-figure refurb

The Lass O' Gowrie, which has stood on Charles Street in the city centre for more than a century has reopened its doors following a extensive refurbishment. The two-part transformation includes the addition of a multi-purpose cinema room.

The Greene King-owned pub has introduced a mini cinema space - which seats 20 or 35 standing - so sports fans can get their fix. It can also be hired out for private sports screenings, as well as bespoke big screen events.

Elsewhere, the old-school boozer has been refreshed with new furniture, carpets, flooring and lighting fixtures, as well as artwork to give it a contemporary feel. The pubs floating beer garden has also had its own makeover, with new seating, decking and fencing.

Josh Murray, General Manager of Lass O' Gowrie, said: “We couldn’t be happier with phase two of the refurbishment and are really excited to be able to welcome our regulars and newcomers back through the pub’s doors. Having received a full makeover both inside and out, the Lass O Gowrie has never looked better, and I speak on behalf of myself and the team when I say we can’t wait to show it off."

Located just a stone's throw away from Manchester Oxford Road Station, the Lass O Gowrie has been a firm fixture of Charles Street for over 170 years. The traditional Victorian pub was named after a 19th Century poem by Scottish Enlightenment poet Lady Caroline Nairne - legend has it that it was the favourite poem of the pub's first ever landlord, a homesick Scotsman.

During Victorian times, the pub served the areas predominately Irish immigrant population - many of whom lived and worked in poverty in nearby slums and factories. Today, is is frequented by a mixture of students and office workers, many of whom come down from the universities for the pub's popular quiz and open mic nights.

The pub has also reintroduced its food offering to give punters a chance to sample its classic dishes like the fish and chips, as well as new plates like the Beyond Meat Burger. Drinks wise, there's an extensive selection of lagers, beer and craft ales from its new brass iron fonts to enjoy.
