We compared Warburtons crumpets with Aldi and Morrisons and one tasted almost identical

Crumpets are pretty glorious and many of us reach for a packet of Warburtons when needing a fix, but how do the supermarket versions compare?

This week we headed to Aldi and Morrisons to pick up a packet of their own brand versions for our battle of the crumpets. We're all 100% crumpet lovers and enjoy tucking into them for a mid afternoon snack, or indeed as a quick fix for lunch.

They're pretty cheap, warm up quickly in the toaster and are absolute heaven when slathered in butter and whatever other topping you fancy. But is there really a difference if you buy a supermarket branded version over the much loved Warburtons? Here's our verdict:

Warburtons, bought from Sainsbury's

When you think of crumpets, a packet of six by iconic bakery brand Warburtons are usually the first to spring to mind. They're the OG of the crumpet world - and for good reason.

I popped into the local Sainsbury's on Old Hall Street after a long day in the newsroom, craving some comforting, carby goodness. I was surprised to see Sainsbury's didn't have any own-brand versions, but this could be just because it was a small store.

For 85p, a pack of six branded crumpets seemed pretty decent in my opinion - until I saw how much less my colleagues paid for their supermarket purchases. Still, for the undisputed champion of crumpets, it's a budget-friendly enough cost for such a treat.

I took them home and had two for a belated breakfast one morning, absolutely slathering them with Flora's buttery vegan spread (which absolutely tastes better than the non-vegan version, trust me) and as soon as I took a bite, the fluffy, bready texture of the delicious, sumptuous crumpet soothed my stresses and made all thoughts of my giant to-do list fade away.

They're thick yet fluffy, filling without being too heavy, and they're absolutely worth every penny. I don't often buy crumpets but after tucking into these, they may have to become a weekly purchase.

Price: 85p for a pack of six

Aldi Village Bakery Crumpets

'Six fluffy crumpets' or so says the packet and at 39p these were set to be an absolute steal from Aldi if they lived up to expectations. I do tend to slip a packet of crumpets into the trolley from time to time, but have to admit I always reach for the Warburtons, which usually cost around 85p for the same amount depending on where you buy them.

A saving of more than 50% is always a winner, so I was hoping for the best as I plonked two of these in the toaster for lunch. They popped up certainly looking the same as Warburtons, but I reserved judgement until I'd tasted them.

Adding a bit of Lurpak on top, I tucked in and was pleasantly surprised. The crumpets had that nice chewy bit on the bottom, but the general texture was indeed 'fluffy' and I can honestly say if I hadn't known these were from Aldi, I'd probably think they were Warburtons. They tasted just as good and at more than half price cheaper I think I'll be switching to these from now on.

Morrisons

I'm a big fan of crumpets but whenever I buy them, I tend to stick to Warburtons. However, this week I decided to branch out and see how Morrisons' own brand offering compared. The crumpets were priced at just 55p for a packet of six, compared to 95p for the same amount of Warburtons crumpets.

I popped them in the toaster and topped them with butter before tucking in, and I was pleasantly surprised by the taste. The crumpets had the perfect texture and were nice and fluffy. Apart from the cheaper price, I couldn't tell the difference between these and Warburtons crumpets. I'll definitely be purchasing these again.
