'We can never allow evil to win: Dad of murdered PC Nicola Hughes' defiant message at Pride of Manchester Awards

The day that PCs Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone were murdered by fugitive Dale Cregan in 2012 is a day no one in Manchester will ever forget.

No one more so than the police officers' families - including Nicola's father Bryn.

Rather than simply giving up after such a tragedy, the former prison officer somehow found the incredible strength to help, not hate.

After launching the PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund, Bryn, 52, has gone on to raise more than £300,000 to provide support, educational opportunities and career training for young people bereaved by violent crime.

His amazing efforts have not gone unnoticed. On Wednesday night, he received the first Pride of Manchester Fundraiser of the Year award.

Bryn told the Manchester Evening News: "I have always said, you have two options. You either give up, you roll over and give up, and evil wins. We can never allow evil to win.

“I get the strength from wanting to make a difference. I also get the strength from what Nicola would do if it was me. I think she would do the same.”

Nicola, from Saddleworth, was just 23 when she died in the line of duty along with along with her colleague Fiona, 32, from Sale.

Up until that point Nicola had thrived in her career, which Bryn describes as her 'ideal job'.

"The job being a police officer - it was an ideal job for her," said Bryn. “It wasn’t about excitement and driving fast cars, it was about wanting to make a difference in the community.

"She was very strong willed, an unbelievable character. We had the same sense of humour and the same sense of wanting to help people.

“Even from an early age, Nicola would volunteer to do something and then volunteer me to do the same thing.

“I had a list of jobs to do for elderly neighbours - go round to number 13, go and change a lightbulb. And that’s what she’d do. And this was a 12, 13 year old girl.”

As part of his fundraising, Bryn has conquered some incredible challenges such as the North Pole Marathon in 2014 and the New York Marathon in 2016.

This year, Bryn is organising ‘A Run to Remember’.

"It’s strange at times because you look at what we do, the events we organise and the fundraising, and Nicola is part of it,” he said.

“And then you’ve got to remember she’s not there. That’s the difficult part. I think I don’t remind myself until I get home at night and I close the door and curtains. That’s when it comes home - we’re doing it in Nicola’s memory.”

Despite his incredible achievements being bittersweet, Bryn says that having something important to focus on ‘drives’ the family.

But he also admits that they are wary not to turn it into an ‘obsession’.'

"It drives us,” he explained. “But there’s a fine balance - you’ve got to be careful not to dedicate too much to Nicola’s memory and turn it into an obsession that stops us getting on with our lives.

“That’s what Nicola would say. She’d say - ‘have a selfish weekend, don’t think about me’. That’s the type of person she was."
