'We can all understand the anger behind this': City centre councillor says lockdown protest graffiti on Piccadilly Gardens wall will stay up 'for a few days'

Graffiti protesting the way the north has been treated in the lockdown debate will stay on the Piccadilly Gardens wall 'for a few days', a councillor said.

The words 'the north is not a petri dish' and 'Full Furloug(sic)' were spray-painted in red in capital letters on the wall on Friday.

Tense negotiations are ongoing between local leaders and the government over lockdown measures in the region.

In a tweet about the graffiti, city centre spokesman Coun Pat Karney said: "We can all understand the anger behind this.

"Mancunians come together when our city is threatened. It will be up for a few days and then removed."

Greater Manchester's leaders locked horns with the government about the financial support on offer if tighter restrictions were imposed in the region.

Mayor Andy Burnham said the government's plans to move the region into Tier 3 due to high coronavirus rates were 'flawed and unfair' in a speech on Thursday afternoon.

He said 'the north is fed up of being pushed around'.

Boris Johnson told Greater Manchester's leaders to 'show the type of leadership seen in Liverpool, Lancashire and London'.

Scores of people voiced support for the graffiti on social media.

One Twitter user wrote: "Ah someone did something good with that s**t wall in Piccadilly Gardens."

While Coun Steve Gribbon wrote: "At long last, a use for that monstrosity of a wall in Piccadilly ‘Gardens’."
