'We call her our warrior' – Daughter's tribute to Tranent NHS nurse who died of coronavirus

The family of a Tranent nurse who passed away after a battle with coronavirus have described her as a "warrior".

Marion Mccruden (63) medically retired from Roodlands General Hospital, Haddington, in 2011 after battling cancer of the tonsils.

She continued to have underlying health conditions and passed away on April 1 after contracting coronavirus.

Her daughter Sharyn Fisher spoke to Edinburgh Live about the life of the "dedicated" nurse

Sharyn said: "Mum trained as a nurse after leaving school and this career as a nurse was so important to her.

"She was a natural, mum married and had three daughters, she later divorced and lived alone until her health deteriorated and she moved to live with me

"Mum was strong, determined, hard-working and a great friend.

"It was important for mum to work hard and you will achieve what you want to in life, she encouraged all her girls to dream big."

Sharyn continued: "Mum was medically retired from Roodlands General hospital in 2011 after a failed return to work after battling cancer of the tonsil.

"This was the beginning of a difficult journey until she died with her health.

"Mum was left with chest complaints and suffered three episodes of being placed in an induced coma to treat pneumonia.

"When mum had symptoms of a chest infection this time and antibiotics did not help, she was admitted to hospital where she was told she had coronavirus and treatment would not be appropriate, so she died in hospital."

Marion, known by many locals as Mhari, was much loved by the Tranent community and always tried to help people where she could.

Sharyn: "There was a house fire in Tranent and the house was in a bad way.

"Mum passed as they were putting it out and she realised it was a family so she went to the shops and bought supplies bread, milk, tea, coffee and took it to family.

"She will be remembered as strong, kind – we call her our warrior because she's been through so much."

News of Marion's passing has shocked locals, with tributes for the nurse pouring in.

One local said: " So sorry for your loss she was a lovely woman R.I.P Mhari "

Another person said: " Thoughts are with use all she was a great lady inside and out rip Mhari."

A fellow nurse wrote: " I worked with your mum in her early nursing days at Roodlands, she was kind, caring and professional."
