'We built a relationship' - Nuno speaks out on Steve Bruce dismissal at Newcastle

Tottenham head coach Nuno Espirito Santo believes that it is “bad news” that Steve Bruce has left Newcastle.

Spurs ran out 3-2 winners over the Magpies on Sunday, in Bruce’s 1000th game in management but what also turned out to be his last for the club.

The departure comes as the new Saudi-led consortium that completed a takeover of Newcastle begin their new era at the club.

The takeover ousted unpopular owner Mike Ashley after 14 years at the club before Bruce, who was also unpopular with some sections of the home support, left by mutual consent on Wednesday morning.

Speaking ahead of his side’s trip to Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa Conference League on Thursday, Nuno had sympathy for the departed manager, saying: “Bad news. Always sad that someone loses their job.

“I started in the Championship when we arrived and played Villa so we built a relationship.

“It's bad news and I hope he doesn't retire because he has a lot more to give to the game."

There were suggestions from Bruce himself that it may be his last in football in an interview with the Telegraph : “I think this might be my last job.

“It’s not just about me; it’s taken its toll on my whole family because they are all Geordies and I can’t ignore that.

“I’m 60 years old and I don’t know if I want to put her [his wife] through it again.

“We’ve got a good life so, yeah, this will probably be me done as a manager - until I get a phone call from a chairman somewhere asking if I can give them a hand.

“Never say never, I’ve learnt that.”

Newcastle are now on the search for a new permanent manager, whilst assistant boss Graeme Jones takes charge of their match against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
