'We are the champions at hide and seek' say police who found shooting range under gangster's home

A hidden shooting range has been found under the home of a US gangster during a raid in which police also seized thousands of rounds of ammunition and several weapons.

The City of Fontana Police Department, in California, was serving a warrant on a known gang member and found a manhole while searching their house on Thursday night (local time).

The police opened it, went in down a ladder with five rungs and ended up in an underground hiding area rigged up with power, lights and an American flag.

After searching the makeshift underground room, which is large enough for people to stand in, police then discovered a narrow shooting range lined with sandbags.

The Fontana authorities seized weapons, ammunition and accessories including a 100-round drum magazine for an AR-15 rifle, and offered a "friendly message to anyone who wants to engage in illegal activity and be a member of a gang".

"We are the champions at hide and seek and no manhole will help you," the police department posted to social media.

"If you hide we will find you. If you run you will go to jail tired."

They also advised those arrested at the home to "put as much effort as you did in your underground cave, into becoming a productive member of society".
