Thank goodness for Jordan Mills. Without the Dolphins’ late offseason signing of Mills in free agency, the Miami Dolphins offensive line would look more like a set of executioners than bodyguards — and with that said, Miami’s offensive line situation in 2019 is still shaky and uncertain at best. The replacement to Ja’Wuan James serves as our honoree today — as we are 79 days away from the start of the Miami Dolphins’ 2019 regular season.
But here’s an interesting tidbit about the history of the Miami Dolphins. A once proud, decorated franchise has had minimal contributions from players who have worn the number 79. A list of former Dolphins to sport the number isn’t exactly a who’s who of NFL starters.
Sam Young, Derrick Shelby and Pat McQuistan have sported the number this decade. From 2000 to 2009 only Anthony Alabi, Ronald Flemons and Kenny Mixon have sported the number. It’s a rough go.
Perhaps the most decorated 79 to date in Miami Dolphins history is former left tackle Jon Giesler — who at one stretch of his playing career went 38 consecutive games without allowing a sack of Dan Marino.
But for Mills’ contributions and importance to the 2019 Miami Dolphins, he gets the call of recognition today. Mills’ play will be one of the keys of Miami’s entire rebuild in 2019 — because with bad pass protection the Dolphins’ offensive will not only crumble but they’ll be unable to assess what they have in quarterback Josh Rosen.
In the grand scheme, Mills may have a very important role in Miami’s rebuild because he will have a direct hand in Miami’s decision making process at the quarterback position next offseason.
