We are “Ed Newman” days away from Miami Dolphins football

Former Miami Dolphins offensive guard Ed Newman wore #65 for his 12-year run with the team in the 1970s and 1980s. And with the Dolphins’ 2019 season now 65 days away, we look back to remember this former All-Pro offensive lineman’s tremendous time with Miami. Drafted in the 6th-round of the 1973 NFL Draft, Newman saw much of the best the Dolphins franchise has had to offer.

Newman missed the perfection of 1972, but he and the Dolphins won the Super Bowl in his rookie season — and Newman played in two more in the early ’80s. Newman’s career really hit its stride in that same timespan, he was named to four consecutive Pro Bowls from 1981-1984 while logging an All-Pro honor in 1984 as well.

All of Newman’s contributions to the Dolphins are even more impressive when you consider just how much he did beyond the gridiron — he was a wrestling coach at Florida International in his offseasons.

As the Dolphins’ modern offensive line continues to try to find their footing, the early era Dolphins offensive linemen continue to be the gold standard. A look through the Dolphins’ Walk of Fame has a bevy of great blockers — Newman included. He was inducted in 2014.
