Ninety nine per cent of candidates have passed West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) , the results of which were declared on Wednesday with students from schools in Kolkata dominating the top ranks.
Out of the 105974 candidates who appeared, 105081 were declared successful.
However, not a single student in the top 10 list was from any school affiliated to the state higher education board. A record number of 36% successful candidates hailed from states other than West Bengal.
“The rank cardscan be downloaded from the board’s website, wbjeeb.nic.in, from this evening. Unsatisfied students who would want to check the calculation sheets (original answer paper) no longer need to use Right to Information (RTI), as they can see it from our office against a payment of Rs. 500 through bank draft,” WBJEE Board chairman Malayendu Saha said on Wednesday.
Students from West Bengal Council for Higher Education (WBCHE) dominated the list of the successful candidates, accounting for 47%, while 28% students are from Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). About 13% of the successful students are from Bihar School education Board.
Students who scored more than zero were considered successful.
Abhinandan Bose of South Point High School of Kolkata ranked first, while there was only one female student in the list of top 10. Ayushi Vidyanta who ranked 10th, is from FIITJEE, Vishakhapatnam.
The exams were conducted on April 22 for admission to undergraduate courses in engineering and technology, pharmacy and architecture in universities, government-run colleges and self-financed institutes in the state.
Most of the students who made it to the top 10 list said that they balanced studies with sports and entertainment, stressing that breaks between long hours of studies are necessary.
“All work and no play do not help. I took breaks of 15-20 minutes after every one hour and a half of studies. I watched IPL and other cricket matches, spent time with friends,” said Debajyoti Kar, who finished fifth.
Naman Biyani, who came sixth, agreed. “Breaks are essential. It used to play video games and watch TV,” he said.
This year, of the 1.25 lakh students who registered for the exam, 1.05 lakh appeared. Of the successful students, 78% are male.
The WBJEEB chairman said that the board will conduct mock counselling at 34 centres between May 28 and June 2 and the actual counselling is likely to start from June 4.
The next WBJEE will be conducted on April 21, 2019.
