Waysiders/Drumpellier make their choice in Scottish Rugby consultation

Waysiders/Drumpellier general manager Gerry Brankin has backed a regionalised approach to Scottish Rugby’s plan to get back playing.

The governing body last week consulted clubs, with the option of a full league programme, comprising of league and then cups, or a ‘regionalised’ hybrid competition, with no promotion or relegation.

Brankin says travel between some teams in the West region would be difficult, and reckons a regionalised league is the way forward.

He said: “They were looking at mini leagues last year, and we had quite a strong pool, but I think as long as you have teams of a similar level playing each other it should work – that would be my hope.

“There’s still a chance for us to get some rugby played there, as long as we’re not having to travel to the likes of Mull, Wigtownshire and places like that.

“Going for a full programme wouldn’t really work; even in the West region you’ve got Lochaber, Fort William, Oban, Mull, which involves travelling outwith your health area.”

Meanwhile, Brankin has been pleased with numbers at fitness training sessions, and hopes that is a good omen for the club.

He said: “My concern about having not having played in over a year was that we would lose guys to other sports, but we’ve had 15 to 20, which is more than we normally get.

“We’ve had more guys turning up.”
