Waysiders/Drumpellier fear top talent may exit after SRU axe campaign

Waysiders/Drumpellier team manager Gerry Brankin admits he has fears some of the top Langloan talent may not return after the campaign was voided.

The West League Two season has been scrapped by Scottish Rugby Union following the coronavirus after the side had battled to survive relegation with games to spare.

Brankin admits he has concerns that some of the top young talent coming through on Monklands may give up the game.

He said: “With regards to the league position it doesn’t really affect us because we are already safe.

“The issue we might have is that players who are in our team decide they don’t want to play.

“It’s a problem we have had all of last season; the more you don’t play games the more people find other things to do with their time.

“This might be slightly different because people aren’t able to go out and leave rugby behind but it’s always the fear, especially with some of our younger players.

“It’s probably the biggest danger at youth level for us where we have a good core in the squad.

“Our under-16s and under-18s have been really impressive this season so we don’t want to lose that.

“We are fairly upbeat but we will only find out in September, or whenever we come back, how big an impact this has had.”
