Ways to reduce hayfever symptoms without medication as 'supplies dwindle'

Piriton stock is beginning to run out as there have been supply problems with one of its main ingredients.

Because of the shortage, many will have to make the most of their current supply - or will have to find ways to avoid hay fever for the next few weeks.

A spokesperson for Boots told the Sun “A very small number of lines are out of stock due to an industry-wide shortage of chlorphenamine maleate.

“We are expecting this to be resolved soon and new deliveries are expected in the coming weeks.”

Customers can still buy other pills such as Piriteze, Allacan, Benadryl and shops’ own brands as they use different ingredients.

Thankfully, there are several ways that you can minimise the risks of hay fever, with guidance from the NHS that will help you "ease your symptoms when the pollen count is high."

Ways to reduce symptoms

There are numerous tricks that will allow you to reduce the symptoms of hay fever - while it's not likely that you'll be able to avoid it entirely, you can prepare for it.

One trick is putting Vaseline around your nostrils, as this will trap pollen from getting into your nose.

You could also look into some wraparound sunglasses which will stop pollen from getting into your eyes.

You might also have to shower and change cloths each time you go out, so possibly multiple times in a day if you're going out more than once.

Other ways that you can reduce symptoms according to the NHS are as follows:

  • stay indoors whenever possible
  • keep windows and doors shut as much as possible
  • vacuum regularly and dust with a damp cloth
  • buy a pollen filter for the air vents in your car and a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter
  • try to avoid contact with other people if you have a high temperature

Things to avoid

There are certain things that you should avoid to reduce the likelihood of Hay fever, according to the NHS.

One is to avoid smoking or being around smokers as it could potentially worsen your symptoms.

Also if you have a cat or dog you should let it out whenever it is needed, as animals could carry pollen into the house on their coats.

Other areas that you should keep an eye out for:

  • do not dry clothes outside as they will catch pollen
  • avoid walking on grass
  • do not keep fresh flowers in the house

There are other options available for he fever sufferers too, with popular alternatives to Piriton which will help quell hay fever symptoms such as Piriteze, Allacan, and Benadryl.
