Wayne Rooney warned Harry Kane is a "shoo-in" to surpass his England goal record

Wayne Rooney's England goalscoring record is under threat from record breaking Harry Kane after the Tottenham man scored against Kosovo.

The Three Lions hit four to round off a qualifying campaign that has seen Kane scoring in every match - the first player to do so.

Kane bagged his 32nd international goal which puts him 21 shy of Rooney's record and Chris Sutton, who never mustered at England cap, can't image the Tottenham forward missing out on the record.

He told the Daily Mail : “Watch out Wayne Rooney, because Harry Kane is coming for your record. At 26 years old, it is hard to see the Tottenham Hotspur striker not writing his name in history as England's greatest-ever goalscorer.

“With his ruthlessness and knack for making mincemeat of the minnows, he has to be a shoo-in to beat Rooney's total of 53.

“It would be unfair to brand Kane a flat-track bully, and I wouldn't call him that because he offers so much more, but he loves facing inferior opponents. There's nothing wrong with that, of course.

“Look at who his goals in 2019 were against. Four against Bulgaria and four against Montenegro, two nations currently ranked joint-61st in the world. Two against Kosovo, ranked 114. Two against the Czech Republic, ranked 43.

“He has not been in the best form for his club but started this week on 28 goals for his country and finished it on 32 - just 21 shy of Rooney. Given the volume of games and the opponents he will face in the years that follow, I cannot see Kane passing up the opportunity to make that record his own."

Kane has hit at least 20 goals for the past five seasons at club level and it poised to do so again this term.

As well as England records the 26-year-old must surely have the Premier League scoring record in his sights despite being over 100 goals off Alan Shearer's tally.

But with Tottenham struggling under Mauricio Pochettino there have been suggestions Kane could look elsewhere with Real Madrid a touted destination.
