Wayne Rooney urges England to challenge Jarell Quansah World Cup red card suspension

  • England defender Jarell Quansah received a straight red card for violent conduct during his side's 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup 2026 last 16, following a VAR review of a tackle on Jesus Gallardo.
  • The red card means Quansah is automatically banned for England's upcoming quarter-final match against Norway, but there is speculation his ban could be suspended.
  • This possibility arises from a recent precedent set by Fifa, which 'suspended' USA star Folarin Balogun's ban for one year, allowing him to play despite receiving a red card.
  • Fifa's disciplinary code, specifically Article 27, permits the judicial body to fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure, a mechanism used in Balogun's case after reported pressure from a US political figure's White House.
  • Pundit Wayne Rooney , while strongly criticising Fifa's decision to suspend Balogun's ban as an “absolute disgrace,” suggested that England should now pursue a similar route to have Quansah's suspension lifted.
